What we did, from the work order
Removed the tree and shrub, excavated the grade and cut out multiple roots to expose the leaking PVC. The source was a cracked 1 1/2 inch PVC 90 on the irrigation water main. Shut the irrigation main off at the backflow preventer by the driveway entrance, cut out the damaged section and the cracked fitting, and installed a new section of 1 1/2 inch PVC with four new 90s. Let the glue cure and cleaned up the work area.
Repairing the pipe and leaving the roots is a callback waiting to happen. The shrub and the roots came out first so the new fitting has somewhere to sit that will not move again.
